Mission Statement

TREND Partnership Mission Statement

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its landmark report, Crossing The Quality Chasm:A New Health System for the 21st Century reaffirming the importance of addressing risk factors, including tobacco use, for reducing cancer and other health disparities.

The mission of the TREND Partnership is to reduce tobacco-related cancer health disparities through the development of translational tobacco disparities research and by providing tobacco-related cancer health disparities research training and education to students underrepresented in the field. This partnership project is likely to have a sustained and powerful impact on the field by increasing the technical capabilities and knowledge base in understanding and addressing tobacco disparities in a patient-centered, culturally competent manner.

We will accomplish this mission by:

  1.  Providing funding, mentoring, and support for CCNY/MSK collaborative translational tobacco-related disparities Pilot Research Projects for Early Stage Investigators (ESI).
  2. Providing translational “cells to society” tobacco-related disparities research training for CCNY students and MSK Research Fellows with broad exposure to relevant scientific domains (e.g., tobacco epidemiology and carcinogenesis, genetic predisposition and neurobiology of nicotine addiction, tobacco dependence treatments, public health policy, tobacco regulatory science, cancer health services and outcomes, etc.).
  3. Augmenting CCNY clinical program curricula to include knowledge and competencies about tobacco-related disparities, tobacco use and dependence, and the evidence-based treatment of tobacco dependence.
