Dr. Christine Sheffer

Bio

Christine Sheffer received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS. Dr. Sheffer held faculty positions at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences prior to becoming an Associate Medical Professor at Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at City College of New York where she teaches in the accelerated BS/MD program. Dr. Sheffer’s clinical and service work has focused on the implementation and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for tobacco dependence. Her research career has been devoted to understanding the bio-behavioral mechanisms involved with tobacco dependence specifically, and substance use and addiction in general. The applications of this work include developing innovative approaches to improving evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment outcomes with a special focus on addressing tobacco-related disparities. In addition, Dr. Sheffer has developed a significant body of research and service work promoting the evidence-based treatment of tobacco dependence in the context of health care settings such as primary care and dental clinics, regional and rural hospitals, community health centers, and medical centers. She is well-published in these domains. She is the recipient of several research grants from the National Institutes of Health including the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Minority Health Disparities and other funding sources. She has served as an officer and/or board member for the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence for several years. She is currently the executive director of the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs, the accrediting body for tobacco treatment specialist training. Dr. Sheffer is also a practicing clinical psychologist with a private practice in New York City.
